Richmond, VA - The Richmond Fire Department pulled a body from the James River late today near the city's Hollywood rapids.
The identity of the victim, an adult female, could not be determined immediately. Richmond fire spokesman Michael Oprandy said it appeared the woman had been dead several days.

Authorities were first alerted about 3:15 p.m. after a security guard observed what he thought was a body lying on a rock and partly covered by the water, Oprandy said. The guard called 911 and the fire department's Swift Water Rescue Team responded.

Using binoculars, crew members immediately determined the victim was deceased, Oprandy said. A Richmond police forensic investigator accompanied the crew to the body to take photographs and observe evidence, Oprandy said.

The body was recovered about 4:30 p.m. between the north bank of the James and the Hollywood rapids, not far from the Tredegar Iron Works property.

The body was sent to the state medical examiner's office for identification and to determine the cause of death.
