Yelm, WA - Two men were rescued from the Nisqually River Saturday morning after getting stuck on rocks near Whitewater Estates in McKenna.

“It was almost the same spot as last time,” South Pierce Fire Chief Bob Vellias said.

Last time was in May, when six teens were trapped on a rock in the Nisqually River for more than five hours.

Two of the six could not swim and none of the teens were wearing life jackets.

Five separate agencies were dispatched to assist in their rescue of the teens, which included zip lines and significant manpower.

Crews set up on each side of the river and used an anchor system to try and float a raft down to the teens.

However, it took a lot of maneuvering and several hours to get it right.

It also took some effort from Central Pierce Fire District’s swift water rescue to get the men this time.

“This time it didn’t become a laborious event like last time,” Vellias said.

“A boat was able to motor out and pick them up.”

The men are described as white males in their 40s.

They were secure on separate rocks, about 35 feet from shore on the Pierce County side of the river.

The call was not considered a priority call by the Pierce County Dive Team, because neither of the men was in distress.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 9:50 a.m. and had the men safely ashore by 10:42 a.m.

Neither of the men suffered injuries.
