Swiftwater Rescue Technician Unit 1 is part of a National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1670 Technician Level Certification.

Rope Rescue Training- Dry Land Mechanical Advantage Practice

An intensive 30 hour swiftwater rescue class. One day of classroom instruction followed by 2 days of developing and practicing swiftwater rescue skills. Objectives emphasize developing self-rescue skills, utilizing existing water dynamics, and handling hazards and obstacles. Participants will set up technical rope systems, controlling in-water contact rescues, and much more. This course is typically followed by the Swiftwater Rescue Technician Advanced course in order to complete the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Swiftwater Rescue Technician Level certification.

 

Equipment Needed

  • Full wetsuit or drysuit
  • Lightweight water or kayak helmet
  • USCG Type III or V approved lifejacket/PFD
  • Hiking or work boots
  • Leather gloves
  • Waterproof flashlight or headlamp
  • Whistle

Prerequisites

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Adequate health insurance coverage
  • Basic swimming ability
  • Good physical condition
  • Completion of Swiftwater Rescue Technichian 1 within the previous 3 years if working toward meeting the requirements for the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1670 Standard for the areas of water and rope a certificate from a recognized technical rope rescue program
