Delta County, CO - The log which caused a raft to overturn with six people on board will be removed by county road and bridge crews and the Hotchkiss Fire Department swift water rescue team, according to Rob Fiedler, the county’s emergency preparedness coordinator.
The cottonwood snag fell into the North Fork of the Gunnison just above the fish hatchery at Lazear.
Steve Rubick was guiding the raft down river June 20 when the craft was sucked into a whirlpool created by the log. The raft flipped and all the occupants went into the river. Rubick was accompanied by his 6-year-old grandson Elijah, and the Bone family — Kevin and Gena and their two children, Carson, 16, and Mo, 13.
Last week, the occupants of the raft and Steve’s wife Linda expressed their appreciation for everyone who helped with the rescue. Their raft went on downriver upside down, but has since been recovered, as well.
Rubick said he would like to work with the North Fork River Improvement Association and other agencies to post warnings — either on a bulletin board or online — when hazards exist on the river.
