Brandon began teaching
rescue and wilderness medicine courses in
2000.
Community
service is in Brandon’s blood. Brandon’s grandfather
Thomas Holmes, Sr. formed Lake Shore Volunteer
Fire Company, the first volunteer fire company
in Brandon’s hometown of Pasadena, MD, in
1944. His father, Chief Francis A. Holmes
served 27 years and reached the rank of Battalion
Chief with Anne Arundel County Fire Department;
and, now serves as President of the AACO Retired
Fire Fighters Association. He is a current EMT; Rescue 3 Water
and Rope Instructor; Wilderness Medical Associates
Instructor; ACA Rescue/Whitewater Kayak Instructor;
and, a Medic First Aid Instructor Trainer.
He has facilitated whitewater kayaking, rafting
and swiftwater rescue courses with many organizations
including Colorado Mountain College campuses
in Breckenridge, Leadville and Steamboat Springs,
Colorado. He has guided whitewater trips and
facilitated first aid and rescue courses throughout
the United States and as far away as Kalinga,
Philippines. After moving from Colorado to
West Virginia in 2005 Brandon formed the New
River Rescue Center in April of 2006 which has morphed into the ELITE Swiftwater Institute. “We
have the instructors, support staff, curriculum,
natural resources, facilities and experience
to provide our first responders with the ultimate
course experience,” says Holmes. “The efficient
execution of complex rescue scenarios requires
that our first responders have access to the
best training available. That’s where the ELITE Swiftwater Institute
comes in. But, our mission is more than teaching
technical rescue courses, our mission is a
social mission. We aim to improve the quality
of life of our nation’s first responders and
the citizens they serve. Preparedness, prevention
and education is what ELITE Swiftwater brings to the table.”
