River first aidWilderness First Aid is a 16- to 20-hour course for those who participate in more extended wilderness trips and want to know what to do in an emergency. This course is the choice of many wilderness trip leaders and guides, volunteers and professionals, who lead groups on extended trips in relatively high-risk situations, where they are far from help.

In addition to the necessary physical skills, this course focuses on the mental, and social skills necessary in wilderness emergency care, where improvisation in a dynamic, often uncontrolled environment is likely: Figuring out what the problems are and what is causing them; setting priorities and making a plan; organizing and leading a rescue or working in a team; communicating with the patient and other people on the scene; and coping with the psychological stress of an emergency in yourself and others.

Participants develop the mental and social skills of emergency care by practicing techniques realistically and doing role-playing scenarios.
