The body of a 24-year-old man from Toccoa, Ga., was recovered Monday
from a vehicle submerged in the swiftly flowing waters of Little River,
four miles past the Townsend Y inside Great Smoky Mountains National
Park.
Matthew Johnson was driving a blue Chevrolet Cavalier on Little River
Gorge Road toward Gatlinburg when he failed to negotiate a right-hand
curve when he left the pavement on the north side of the road,
according to a press release from Nancy Gray, Park spokeswoman.
After leaving the road, the car plunged 25 feet and into the river.
The car flipped and landed on its roof and was almost fully submerged in the river except for its rear tires, Gray said.
There were no skid marks on the road.
The victim's body was still inside the vehicle when emergency personnel arrived.
A
passing motorist notified National Park Service personnel at 8 a.m.
Monday after seeing the car on its top and submerged in the water in an
area known as the Elbow section of the river, one mile east of Indian
Head Rock. While the exact time of the accident is unknown, authorities
believe it occurred during the middle of the night.
The fatal accident occurred in Blount County, about two miles from the Sevier County line.
The
mangled vehicle, with the body still inside, was pulled out of the
water onto the road at 9:30 a.m. by a wrecker from Butler's Wrecker
Service, Walland.
Little River was blocked between the Townsend Y
and Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area to all but emergency vehicles from 8
a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The Blount Sheriff's Office Rescue Team responded and a swift-water rescue was undertaken.
The
body was transported to Blount Memorial Hospital by Rural/Metro
Ambulance Service. Also on hand were personnel from the Townsend Fire
Department and a Maryville firefighter who is part of the dive team.
