MD - The body of a white male has been found in the Potomac River, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

About 1:15 this afternoon, swift water rescue teams from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to an area of the river near Riverbend Park in Great Falls, Va., on the report of a body in the water, according to Pete Piringer, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

Fairfax County officials also responded, Piringer said.

The body was caught in trees and bushes in the water, though it was ‘‘well off the shoreline,” Piringer said.

The body has yet to be identified. It appeared as though the body had been in the water for an extended period of time, Piringer said.

The cause of death is as of yet undetermined. The body is being taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for identification and an autopsy, according to Officer Melanie Hadley, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Police Department.

Montgomery County Police are continuing to investigate the death. Investigators did not initially suspect foul play, Hadley said.
